Don’t Make It Complicated

Not a single day goes by without someone asking me:

“What do you eat?”

or

“What did you do?”

It’s a fair question considering the transformation I’ve gone through over the past year and a half.

Honestly, I didn’t change a lot of stuff in my life.

I was already working out on a pretty regular basis. I lead a relatively active lifestyle, between my martial arts training during the week and the short excursions (hikes) that my family go on during the weekends.

So, what’s the difference?

How I managed to drop a ton of weight and completely change my physique have to do with 2 simple things:

Grains and Sugar (refined sugar that is)

Other than that, my life has been pretty unchanged.

While a strict Paleo or Primal guy or girl will eat mostly organic foods (and grass fed beef), I honestly haven’t been all that strict with that sort of thing.

Why?

Because I actually have a life.

When people hear that I don’t eat grains or sugar they automatically think I’m super particular and that I never go out to eat (and only make my own food).

It couldn’t be further from the truth.

I enjoy going out to eat

The difference is that I hold the potatoes, bread or pasta. Instead ask for an extra helping of vegetables, or perhaps sweet potatoes (sometimes sweet potato fries) along with a salad.

For dessert I forgo the cake or ice cream and instead order a plate of fresh fruit….

Otherwise I eat everything else, “as is” from the menu.

I also go to the regular grocery store (and don’t get ultra bummed out when they are ‘out’ of organic products) or Trader Joe’s. Occasionally I’ll go out to a market called “Mother’s Market” around here.

While I’m all for buying organic products when possible, if you don’t have access to it (easily) or it’s hurting your budget… do what you can.

In other words, deal with what’s available.

So my advice to people is to stick with the basics. You don’t have to upend your life completely or go to the poorhouse to make the primal diet work for you.

    Nice post! Did you drink alcohol before going primal? If so, do you drink alcohol now (and in what quantities, in what frequency, and what do you drink)?

      Hi AJ,

      Thanks for the kudos.

      I didn’t drink a ton before I switched to Primal… and since switching I have maybe a beer or two a week (or wine) usually with food. (I generally drink light beer, like Pacific or Amstel Light).

      I’ve never been a big ‘hard liquor’ guy, so I stick pretty much to beer.
